The route out arrives at Camp Lake in 2-1/4 miles and Bear Lake in 4 miles, great day hikes. The fastest way to get it is by hiking at the nearby Crabtree Trailhead, set at 7,180 feet on the edge of the Emigrant Wilderness. Guess what? You can get all of that in the immediate area. Add 2 miles to the journey with an easy and peaceful hike to Catfish Lake, which is a set of shallow ponds surrounded by old-growth forest.Īfter a day or two, most start to yearn for a little more seclusion, a little more ambitious adventure, and maybe a chance at better fishing. Where the pavement ends and the trail begins, bicycles are not allowed. Picnic spots abound, especially near the inlet located at the east end of the lake.īicycles are allowed along the paved bike path that goes through the Pinecrest Picnic Area along the shoreline. Pack along your bi-noculars and bird book because the birdwatching is quite good. It's an easy, pleasant hike around the scenic shore of Pinecrest Lake that is suitable for the entire family.

1 adventure for families is to try at least a portion of the Pinecrest National Recreation Trail, usually parlaying it with a picnic. To make it work, the resort provides a variety of cabins, townhouses with fireplaces, and deluxe hotel rooms. The lake gets regular stocks of rainbow trout, which join a small resident population of brown trout.Īt the center of it all is Pinecrest Lake Resort, and one of the attractions is its relative proximity to the Bay Area, far closer than most mountain destinations in Northern California. Small sailboats, paddleboats and rowboats (outboard motors extra, of course) are also available for rent. Some families will rent a pontoon boat so they can enjoy a picnic on the water, then use the boat as a swimming platform, or fish a little. A bonus is a small but excellent marina that rents all types of boats. The water is clear and cold at Pinecrest Lake, but by midsummer it is good for swimming on a hot day.

In addition, nearby Beardsley Reservoir and the Tuolumne River provide great side-trip options. The surrounding area is beautiful, best known for its big sugar pines and cedars, with hiking and biking trails, decent fishing for rainbow trout, and nearby trail heads for wilderness camping trips.
